ภาษา C++ มีตัวแปรสำหรับเก็บค่าตัวเลขหลายแบบให้เลือกใช้ โดยหลัก ๆ จะแบ่งเป็นตัวเลขจำนวนเต็ม (integer) และตัวเลขที่มีจุดทศนิยม
โดยตัวแปรสำหรับเก็บตัวเลขจำนวนเต็ม ก็ยังถูกแบ่งออกเป็นแบบย่อย ๆ ตามค่าต่ำสุดและค่าสูงสุดที่ตัวแปรประเภทนั้น ๆ จะเก็บได้ เช่น int (แบบ 32 bit) ก็จะเก็บค่าตัวเลขตั้งแต่ -2^31 ถึง 2^31 - 1 หากเป็น long int (แบบ 64 bit) ก็จะเก็บค่าตั้งแต่ -2^63 ถึง 2^63 - 1 เป็นต้น
อะไรจะเกิดขึ้นหากเรามีการกำหนดค่าตัวเลขที่เกินกว่าขอบเขตของประเภทตัวแปรที่เราระบุ การทำแบบนี้จะเกิดสิ่งที่เรียกว่า numeric overflow ขึ้น ซึ่งทำให้ผลลัพธ์ที่ได้ไม่เป็นไปตามที่คาดหวัง
